Comic Relief Announces THE TONY CLIFTON REVUE
June 27, 2012Tony Clifton, alter ego of comic genius, Andy Kaufman, has been taking up residence at the world famous Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, with evenings of music, mayhem and sexual anarchy, and did we say more mayhem? The engagement is set for a limited run, with a show this Thursday, June 28th, and Friday, June 29th, as well as every Friday night in July, only.
Clifton will be backed by a 14-member cast featuring his kick-ass band, The Cliftones; and his young, tantalizing burlesque dancers, the Cliftonettes — all joining in to celebrate a milestone event: the 28th anniversary of Andy Kaufman’s mysterious disappearance.
Clifton was discovered by Andy Kaufman in 1969, while performing in a seedy lounge in Las Vegas. Captivated, Kaufman engaged Tony to open for him on several occasions, most notably his historic “Carnegie Hall Concert.”
Clifton’s most controversial appearance was witnessed by the cast of the hit ABC-TV show Taxi. Tony showed up to rehearsal drunk and with two hookers in tow, and was promptly escorted off the Paramount lot by armed security.
Clifton has appeared on such shows as the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live and was Miss Piggy’s love interest on her television special. Clifton starred opposite Jim Carrey in the Milos Forman film Man on the Moon.
In May 2010, Tony gave a preview of these upcoming shows at the Comedy Store to four sold out nights and standing ovations. The popular demand for more Tony was born there.
