The original “We Are The World” and last year’s “We Are The World 25 For Haiti” featured great artists raising money for important causes, but they failed to do one thing—really rock!

No worries there with the ’80s Rockers For Japan benefit Saturday, April 16 at Harper’s in Tarzana. Organized by Terry Ilous (XYZ, Great White), the show will include members of some of the ’80s most popular rock and metal bands. Ilous and Jeff Paris have also written a song and are creating a video that will feature many of the participating musicians. The song will be recorded, and the video shot live at the benefit. It will subsequently be available on iTunes. Proceeds from the event and sales of the track and video will be donated to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts.

“Japan has always been very supportive of our kind of music, and this is our small way of giving back,” says Ilous.

In addition to Ilous, performers who have committed to the show and recording/video project include Chris Slade (AC/DC/ The Firm), Rudy Sarzo (Whitesnake/Ozzy Osbourne/ Blue Oyster Cult), Brian Tichy (Whitesnake /Foreigner/Billy Idol), Richie Kotzen (Poison/Mr. Big), Juan Croucier (Ratt), Jon Levin (Dokken), John Payne (Asia), Teddy Zigzag (Guns N’ Roses), James Lomenzo (Megadeth/Black Label Society), Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake), Robin McAuley (Survivor /MSG), Simon Wright (Dio/AC/DC/UFO), Robert Sarzo (Hurricane) and Mitch Perry (MSG/Asia/Edgar Winter).

Other vocalists contributing to the benefit song include Lita Ford, Don Dokken and Paul Shortino. The show will also feature guitarists Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big/Poison) and Michael Thompson, an American musician well known in Japan. Line6 will provide the backline and Spaun Drums will provide all drums.

A live streaming broadcast will be done by Front Row Entertainment and viewers will be able to watch the event for free online; a link to the Red Cross will be provided and the musicians who are participating request that those watching make a small donation. New artists are being added to this roster daily, and Ilous promises one very big surprise, to be unveiled at the show.

Adult psycho thriller Sanatorium starring adult film icon Tabitha Stevens released recently and with it, buzz on how this adult film movie followed a mainstream protocol – even composing an original soundtrack. The following is a Q&A with Guns N’ Roses member Teddy Andreadis and Static X’s Koichi Fukuda.

Q:  What was it like scoring tracks for Sanatorium?

Ted:  It was a very interesting yet very enjoyable project.  I really love the movie and found myself really exploring sounds and textures that would really lend itself to the film.

Koichi:  I always enjoy working on music for films/visuals; the music/sound effects can make whatever the emotions that are intended to be expressed in a piece come alive.

Q:  Were you watching the film while you were scoring the soundtrack to get an idea of how dark the music needed to be?

Ted:  Yes. I found myself coming up with two and three alternative parts for each scene.

Koichi:  Yes, I always watch the film when I’m working on the soundtrack so I can understand and feel the mood for each scene; the music is inspired by the visuals and the stories.

Q:  Please list the bands that you have performed in (the studio as well as live)

Q:  Do you feel that it is important that even a high budget ‘Adult Film’ should have a unique and original soundtrack?  Why?

Ted:  Because it is a film, period!  Music plays a huge part in any film. I think the more unique the music, the more interesting the film.

Koichi:  It depends whether it is purposeful.  There are so many videos/films of all quality and budget levels being made by all kinds of people with all levels of skills. If anybody intends to produce something that stands out among them and especially if the focus is on the art direction it is highly effective to have a unique and original soundtrack.

Q:  What was it like working with adult film star Tabitha Stevens and writer/producer/director Gary Orona? Was your experience with them professional?

Ted:  Tab and Gary are truly a joy to work with.  They both love what they do and it comes across in the work.  I hope I can have the opportunity to work with them again soon.  They both allowed me a little freedom to create what I thought would fit. And of course, when it didn’t work we changed it.  Really a great experience!

Koichi:  It was a pleasure to work with them.  They are not only very professional, but have the passion for what they do.

Q:  Do you think that there will be more original soundtracks being made for adult films?  Do you think that Tabitha and Gary have helped open the door for other adult companies to have creative and original soundtracks made?

Ted:  Yes of course. There are a lot of very talented music people out there who would love the opportunity to create something original.  Myself, I’m always more interested in a film when the music is unique to the film.  It always keeps my attention and makes me stay to read the credits.  I know a lot of films have small budgets and choose canned music over live recorded stuff, but I think that if more companies used original compositions there would be a treasure chest of stuff to pick from.  Just gotta find it!!

Koichi:  I don’t have much knowledge as to how ‘adult companies’ decide what to produce, but hopefully this film will inspire others to think outside of the box.

Cambodian-American rock band Dengue Fever (www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic) announced today that they have confirmed tour dates in Australia this Fall that include two major music festivals for October.

Dengue Fever will arrive in Australia to make their Perth debut at One Movement Music Festival (http://festival.onemovementmusic.com/artist/191) and will end their tour at one of the major multi-arts festivals in the world, the Melbourne Festival (www.melbournefestival.com.au/program/production?id=3840&idx=13&max=54). In 2009, Dengue Fever peformed at WOMADelaide, playing two shows at the festival’s Adelaide home. Shortly thereafter, the band played their first and only New Zealand shows at WOMAD in Taranaki, NZ.
