The “showgirl” is the life’s blood of touring feature entertainment. The best of the best in the exotic showgirls arena are honored each year with the presentation of Exotic Dancer’s Overall Entertainer of the Year Award at the Annual ED’s Awards in Las Vegas during the Gentlemen’s Club Expo.

To enhance the prestige of this National Award and to insure that the most qualified applicants all have a shot at the title, ED Publications, producer of the EXPO, the Annual ED’s Awards and the bimonthly Club Bulletin magazine, is launching a new national contest series in 2014 — the Annual Exotic Dancer Invitational.

This feature dance contest will be held twice a year — once on the West Coast (EDI – West Coast) and once on the East Coast (EDI – East Coast) — with the winners of each contest filling two of the four nominee slots for the ED’s “Overall Feature Entertainer of the Year” Award.  (The official titles they will earn will be EDI’s 2014 Showgirl Champion-East Coast and EDI’s 2014 Showgirl Champion-West Coast.) There will also be a “newcomer” division, vying for the title EDI’s 2014 Showgirl Newcomer (East Coast and West Coast). These “Invitationals” will also provide the top showgirls with an additional asset: The opportunity to earn valuable contest titles from the industry’s trade publication to help enhance their feature entertainer careers. There will also be cash prizes for the top three finishers.

“The days of the magazine models are long gone, so the only real opportunity for ‘showgirls’ to build their credits as feature entertainers is through high-end and selective dance contests,” says ED Publications’ Associate Publisher, Dave Manack. “Our company is going to bring the same standards of professionalism that we bring each year to our Annual Expo and Awards Show to these Exotic Dancer Invitationals. And, as indicated by the word ‘Invitational,’ we will only be inviting the best of the best to compete for the main and mini titles. Ultimately, through these contests, we will be telling club owners which showgirls are the ones they want to book in their clubs.”

There is no fee for the contestants to participate, and contestants will receive complimentary hotel accommodations. Target dates for the 2014 Exotic Dancer Invitationals are March 2014 to late May (host clubs TBA).

While Lisa Ann is always a hit, there are few places where the legendary feature dancer is more popular than the Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo. The convention pushes into this week Sunday, August 21 thru Wednesday, August 24th in Las Vegas, bringing together club owners, performers and others for the important annual event.

The expo culminates in an award show Tuesday night, August 223^rd. Last year she won the organization’s Adult Movie Entertainer of the Year trophy, making her ineligible for the award this year, but she is up for Club Favorite Entertainer of the Year at the 2011 ceremony.

After the event she will be hosting the official awards show after party at Sapphire with Nikki Benz.

Everything is coming together for Bethany St. James, with the final touches being put on a new website, an action-packed trip to Los Angeles and the ensuing media barrage only a week away, and she’s also gearing up for the Annual Gentlemens Club Owners Expo, which entertainers like Bethany will be prettying up August 21 thru 24 in Las Vegas.

“Generation Next,” with a focus on the future of the adult nightclub industry in general and the next wave of club ownership and management in particular, will be the theme of the 19th Annual Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo this August 21-24, 2011 at the luxurious Mirage Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

For 19 years, ED Publications, the adult nightclub industry’s trade magazine, has produced the Annual Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo, the only national convention and tradeshow for the multi-billion-dollar adult nightclub industry. The Expo draws more than 3,000 attendees, including over 1,700 club owners, general managers, and club personnel from individual clubs and club chains.  Other Expo attendees include liquor, beer and wine distributors; food and beverage companies; club furnishings and bar products companies; attorneys, architects, club brokers and insurance specialists; and sound, lighting and staging companies.

Exotic Dancer magazine — which started as an annual printed guide to gentlemen’s clubs across the nation and evolved into the adult nightclub industry’s premier national trade magazine and convention and tradeshow — is proud to announce that in 2011 the publication will celebrate its 20-Year Anniversary.

“ED was started pretty much in my garage back in 1992,” recalls founder and Publisher Don Waitt.  At the time Waitt was publisher of a national concert industry trade magazine.  “I got tired of traveling to cities to cover concerts and not being able to find the local stripclubs because there was no guide.  Remember, there was no Internet back then,” says Waitt.  “So I thought a city-by-city, state-by-state guide that listed stripclubs and gave insider details on each club would be a winner.”

Dubbed “Exotic Dancer,” the first guide to stripclubs across the country came out in 1992, and has continued to come out every year since then.  Today, the guide is known as Exotic Dancer’s “Annual VIP Guide,” with more selective listings on the country’s best gentlemen’s clubs.  That annual guide turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg.

“Gathering the club listing information back then put me in direct contact with adult club owners who I found were hungry for news and advice geared to their unique industry,” says Waitt, who answered that call in 1993 with the First Annual Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo, a national convention and tradeshow for club owners and feature entertainers held in Las Vegas.  The Expo has been held every year since then, and will mark its own 20-Year Anniversary next year.

“The club owners responded so well to the legal and marketing panels at the Expo that it made sense to do an industry trade magazine that could deliver that type of content more often than just once a year, so in the spring of 1996 we started Exotic Dancer Bulletin, a quarterly trade magazine for the industry,” says Waitt.  In 2000, the ED Bulletin went to a bi-monthly format, and is now known as ED Club Bulletin.

In 1998, launched the Annual Adult Nightclubs & Exotic Dancer Awards at the annual Club Expo, honoring the industry’s top clubs and entertainers each year.  And in 1999, ED gathered together some of the industry’s top leaders and together with them formed the national Association of Club Executives (ACE).  Today the national ACE Board of Directors assists more than thirty statewide ACE chapters across the country.

“In hindsight I almost wish I had not called the company Exotic Dancer,” says Waitt, “because our publications and convention really ended up being more about the clubs and the men and women who run them.  Don’t get me wrong, the dancers are without a doubt the single, most important component of our industry, but our focus has always been on the people who provide the stage upon which they dance.”

In April 2008, ED Publications—including its bimonthly magazine, annual guides, convention, and awards show—was purchased by Rick’s Cabaret International, the award-winning national club chain that is publicly traded on NASDAQ (trade symbol: RICK).  Waitt stayed on as Publisher with a management contract that stretches through April 2014.

“Over the past two decades, we have seen a lot of changes in our industry,” says Waitt.  “These aren’t the Charlie’s Angels big-hair days anymore; we’re in the Facebook world today, so it makes sense as we mark our 20-Year Anniversary that this year’s EXPO focuses on what the future holds for our industry.”

There are four award categories for feature entertainers at the Annual ED’s Awards Show:  Newcomer Entertainer of the Year, Adult Movie Entertainer of the Year, Club Favorite of the Year and the prestigious Overall Entertainer of the Year.  Each of the five Overall Entertainer of the Year nominees will provide a live feature performance during the Awards Show.
